چکیده
VIRTUAL reality, also called virtual environments, is a new interface paradigm that uses computers and human-computer interfaces to create the effect of a three-dimensional world in which the user interacts directly with virtual objects. The term “virtual reality” has received quite a lot of attention in the last few years, so we feel it is important to be clear about its meaning. For the purposes of this article, we adopt the following definition: Virtual reality is the use of computers and human-computer interfaces to create the effect of a three-dimensional world containing interactive objects with a strong sense of threedimensional presence. We present Studierstube our multi-user virtual environment and its application in the area of scientific visualization. We discuss concepts and advantages of using augmented reality – where the real environment is overlaid by computer generated images – as userinterface to complex, three-dimensional visualizations. We describe our experiences with such a system and propose future work in the ar...
متن کاملThe Virtual Reality Responsive Workbench: Applications and Experiences
Virtual Reality (VR) is a complex and challenging field [Earnshaw and Rosenblum, 1995; Rosenblum and Cross, 1997], and several distinct types of systems have been developed for displaying and interacting with virtual environments. One of the newest is the Virtual Reality Responsive Workbench [Kreuger and Froehlich, 1994; Kreuger et al., 1995; Rosenblum, Bryson, and Feiner, 1995]. The Workbench ...
متن کاملVR++ and its Application for Interactive and Dynamic Visualization of Data in Virtual Reality
A significant problem in scientific visualization is how to create modular, interactive, and dynamic virtual reality (VR) applications that efficiently visualize large datasets. One of the obstacles often encountered is the high degree of complexity and specialized knowledge involved in creating parallel visualization applications. Designing a framework especially for this purpose, seems like a...
متن کاملVIRPI: A High-Level Toolkit for Interactive Scientific Visualization in Virtual Reality
Research areas that require interactive visualization of simulation data tend to dismiss virtual reality due to the lack of accessible tools for application specialists. This paper presents an integral toolkit for interactive visualization in virtual reality environments. The toolkit defines a framework to build applications that allow the user to interact with arbitrary simulation software and...
متن کاملApplication Scenarios for Scientific Visualization and Virtual Reality using a State-of-the-art CAVE Infrastructure
Today’s Virtual Reality applications require a high degree of immersion. This may be achieved by using a CAVE incorporating powerful 3D computer graphics workstations, panoramic multiple screen displays and projection walls, stereovision and interaction devices such as trackers and data gloves. This article describes Virtual Reality applications from the fields of scientific visualization in me...
